(LEBANON, Ill., March 19)- The McKendree University softball team won game two of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday to earn a split with No. 7 University of Missouri-St. Louis.
The Bearcats are now 9-15 overall and 3-3 in the GLVC, and will host Maryville University at 12 p.m., on Sunday for a conference doubleheader.
McKendree had more hits than the No. 7 Tritons in game one, but were unable to bring in any runs across the plate in a 1-0 loss. UMSL scored the lone run of the game in the sixth inning on a throwing error that proved to be the difference. Freshman pitcher
Maci Ingram (Woodlawn, Ill./Nashville Community High School) fell to 2-6 overall with the hard luck loss, but struck out six and walked only one with three hits.
Tylin Stephens (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs High School) had two of the Bearcat's four hits in game one.
In game two, junior pitcher
Holly Magre (Festus, Mo./St. Pius X) limited the Tritons to only two hits and struck out five in a 2-0 win. McKendree took advantage of two errors by the Tritons in the third inning to score the only two runs of the game. Freshman
Sara Radae (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville High School) singled to open the inning and advanced to second on an overthrow by the second baseman. Radae advanced to third on a single by Stephens, and junior
Jamie Doggendorf (Dittmer, Mo./Northwest) followed with a single to the shortstop, but Radae would score from third when the shortstop lost the handle on the ball while trying to hold her at third. Stephens would later score in the inning on a flyout by junior
Rachel Hastings (Forsyth, Ill./Maroa-Forsyth High School) to right field. The Tritons threatened in the sixth inning with runners on second and third with one out. A flyout to a diving centerfielder appeared to allow UMSL to score, but it was determined that the runner at third left early for the third out of the inning. The Tritons were unable to reach base in their final at bat to give McKendree the 2-0 win. Junior
Erica Schuelke (Germantown, Wis./West Bend) had two hits for the Bearcats in game two.
