Softball Falls Twice to No. 1 Indianapolis, Ends Six-Game Win Streak

(LEBANON, Ill., April 8)- The McKendree University softball team had its six-game winning streak come to an end on Friday after losing both games of a doubleheader to No. 1 University in Indianapolis.

The Bearcats fell to 17-21 overall and 11-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and will host Saint Joseph's College (Ind.) on Saturday, April 9 for a conference doubleheader at 12 p.m.

McKendree almost pulled off the upset in game one, but gave up two runs in the top of the seventh and couldn't regain the lead to fall 5-4. The Bearcats took an early 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run homer by Hanna Branch (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood). The Greyhounds tied the game with a long ball of their own in the second inning, but Rachel Hastings (Forsyth, Ill./Maroa-Forsyth High School) hit a two-run homer in the third inning to give McKendree a 4-2 lead. Indianapolis cut the score to 4-3 in the fourth inning, and scored the eventual game-winning run on a two-run double in the seventh.

Holly Magre (Festus, Mo./St. Pius X) fell to 10-7 with the loss, while Jamie Doggendorf (Dittmer, Mo./Northwest) had two hits and a run scored.

The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in game two in the first inning on a single by Hastings that scored Branch. The Greyhounds took a 4-1 lead in the third inning, but McKendree cut the score to 4-3 on a single by Liz Klussman (Washington, Mo./Washington) that scored Megan Radae (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville High School) and Sydne Bryant (Danville, Ill./Schlarman Academy). Indianapolis added six runs in their next two at bats to jump out to a 9-3 lead, but the Bearcats would start to rally. Branch drew a bases loaded walk in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 9-4, and RBI singles by Dani Schoenbacher (Tamaroa, Ill./Pinckeyville) and Doggendorf in the seventh made the score 9-6, but McKendree couldn't complete the comeback in the loss.

Magre fell to 10-8 with the loss and had four strikeouts, while Doggendorf added two hits and an RBI.
