(LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 25)--The McKendree University will make its longest Great Lakes Valley Conference road trip of the season this weekend to face a pair of league foes. The Bearcats will first square off with Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., Thursday evening before closing out its northern swing Saturday afternoon at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Both games will be streamed by the host schools on the GLVC Sports Network at
www.glvcsn.com.
McKendree broke into the win column in GLVC play during its last game on Saturday at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center. The Bearcats rallied from a 15-point, first-half deficit to post an 85-80 victory over Saint Joseph's College.
Justin Blanks (Barberton, OH/Norton) led the offensive charge for McKendree as he scored 15 of his team-leading 20 points in the second half. Blanks assisted on the go-ahead lay-up by
Michael Jackson (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) with 24.2 seconds to play, then hit four big free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win. The Bearcats improved to 7-9 overall and 1-7 in the GLVC thanks to Saturday's victory.
Jackson and
David Franklin (O'Fallon, IL/Althoff Catholic) each netted 18 points against Saint Joseph's as Franklin added 10 rebounds and five assists.
Nolan Gerling (Germantown, IL/Mater Dei) chipped in with 15 points. Thanks to his 18-point effort, Jackson now has 996 career points at McKendree. He is four points shy of becoming the 50th member of the Bearcats' 1,000-point club. Jackson would also become the first McKendree player to score at least 1,000 points with the Bearcats holding membership in NCAA Division II.
Five Bearcats are still scoring in double figures, including Franklin's 18.7 PPG while appearing in just seven games so far this season. Jackson is averaging 16.7 PPG with Blanks close behind at 16.3 PPG. Both Jackson and Blanks sit in the top 10 in the GLVC in scoring average. Gerling is next at 14.3 PPG, while he sits third in the league in rebounding at 8.4 RPG.
Head coach
Harry Statham earned career victory No. 1,108 with the Bearcats' triumph over Saint Joseph's on Saturday. Statham is the all-time wins leader in college basketball history at the four-year level. He enters the weekend exactly 50 wins in front of Duke's Mike Krzyzewski on the all-time wins chart.
