(FULTON, MO., Oct. 3) – The McKendree University men's tennis team competed at the William Woods University Doubles Invite over the weekend winning both the A and B flights.
McKendree had two teams compete in the A flight of the WWU Doubles Invite, with the duo of seniors
Maico Egbers (Breda, Netherlands/Graaf Engelbrecht School) and
Ben Muller (Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand/Whangarei) winning the flight. The team of sophomores
Johnny Hu (Antwerpen, Mol/Campus Het Spoor) and
Nicholas De Guzman (Courtice, ON/Holy Trinity) also competed in the A flight, taking an 8-2 victory in their first matchup but falling 8-5 to the second place team from William Woods, and eventually earning fourth place. Muller and Egbers had a bye in the first round, but won the following two matches by scores of 9-8 (5) and 8-5 to win the A flight.
The Bearcats also had three teams competing in the B flight, with the pairing of juniors
Kayser Khan (London, England/Southfields Academy) and
Ognjen Jevtic (Vukovar, Croatia) winning the B flight. Khan and Jevtic cruised through the competition taking three victories on the way to the top, 8-5, 8-4, and 9-8 ( ). Other teams for McKendree in the B flight were sophomore
Ratik Khanna (Jalandhar, India/MGN High School) and junior
Joseph Jones (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East High School), as well as junior
Evan Lockwood (Maitland, FL/Winter Park) with William Woods player Harrison Laurent. Both teams were defeated in the first round of the B flight, but Khanna and Jones rebounded to take an 8-2 victory before falling to a team from William Woods.
The Bearcats are back in action on Saturday for a match against Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent Truman State at the McKendree Tennis Courts beginning at 11 a.m.
