(LEBANON, Ill., Oct. 5) – The McKendree University women's hockey team battled hard against No. 1 ranked Liberty University, but fell in a 1-0 loss.
McKendree entered the contest 1-0 on the season after taking a 2-0 shutout victory over Grand Canyon University. The Bearcats came into the season with a pre-season ranking of 14, with Liberty debuting at the No. 1 spot.
Getting the nod in the cage was sophomore goaltender
Jazmin Malinowski (New Lenox, IL/Lincoln-Way), who turned away 43 of 44 shots on goal in the contest. Malinowski recorded a save percentage of 0.977 and had a goals against average of just 1.00 in the game. On the season she has a save percentage of 0.984, a goals against average of 0.50, and one shutout.
The only goal of the contest came with just 25 seconds left in the first period on a rebound that found a Liberty player's stick. Both teams had numerous opportunities to score throughout the game, but only one shot found the back of the net.
The Bearcats hit the road for a two game series at Midland University. Saturday, McKendree takes the ice at 4 p.m. against the Warriors, followed up by a Sunday matchup at noon.
