(LEBANON, Ill., Dec. 29)--The McKendree University women's basketball team returns to the court Saturday for its final non-conference game of the 2017-18 season. The Bearcats will travel north to Grand Rapids, Mich., to face Davenport University in a contest set to tip off at 1 p.m. ET (Noon CT).
McKendree will be in search of its third consecutive victory in its first-ever meeting against the Panthers. The Bearcats are 3-5 overall following wins over Kentucky State University on Dec. 11 and Northwest Missouri State University in the team's final game before the holiday break on Dec. 18. McKendree used a 9-2 run over the final four minutes against Northwest Missouri State to pull away and collect the win. The victory allowed the Bearcats to notch back-to-back wins for the first time since last December, when the team put together a five-game win streak.
Jordan Heberg enters the second part of the season as the Bearcats' leading scorer. Heberg is averaging 10.6 PPG, and is the lone McKendree player scoring in double figures.
Shauniera Wilson (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) has come on of late to move into second on the Bearcats' scoring chart at nine points per outing. She has averaged 12.3 PPG in the last three games for McKendree, including a career-best 18 points in the 64-51 triumph over Kentucky State. Wilson is pulling down 4.8 rebounds per game, which is second on the squad. Jordan Morton leads the Bearcats on the glass at 6.3 rebounds per contest. Callie Pohlman -- who is fifth on the team in scoring at 7.5 PPG -- leads McKendree with 24 assists and 14 steals through the first eight games in 2017-18.
Following Saturday's non-conference tilt, McKendree will jump back in to the heart of its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule beginning with a trip to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Jan. 4. The Bearcats and Rangers will meet at 5:30 p.m. in Kenosha, Wis. McKendree will then return to the Harry M. Statham Sports Center for a GLVC match-up against the University of Illinois Springfield on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 1 p.m. That will also mark Alumni Day for the women's basketball program.
ABOUT DAVENPORT
The Panthers hold a 4-7 overall record heading into Saturday's game with McKendree. Davenport has not played since Dec. 16, when it edged Wayne State University 43-41 in a low-scoring affair in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match-up. The Panthers are 3-2 and averaging 53.8 points per game at home this season. Like McKendree, Davenport has just one player averaging in double figures. Emily Severn leads the way at 11.5 PPG. Jenna Falkenberg, who is second on the squad in scoring at 7.2 PPG, leads the Panthers in rebounding at 8.1 per outing. Amanda Merz has handed out 37 assists in 11 games.
Davenport has faced two other GLVC opponents this season. The Panthers dropped a 75-67 overtime decision to the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Nov. 10 before falling 70-63 one day later to Maryville University. Both games were played on the Maryville campus.
