(LEBANON, Ill., Feb. 13)--The McKendree University men's basketball team will wrap up a stretch of three Great Lakes Valley Conference games in five days Monday night in Liberty, Mo., against William Jewell College. Tip-off for the contest is set for 7:30 p.m.
Monday's game was originally slated to be played on Jan. 14, but was postponed due to an ice storm that enveloped most of the Midwest at that time. McKendree enters the contest with a 9-13 overall record and a 3-11 mark in the GLVC. The Bearcats opened a six-game road trip over the weekend with losses Thursday at Drury University (86-73) and at Missouri S&T on Saturday (102-88). At Missouri S&T,
Nate Michael (St. Joseph, IL/St. Joseph-Ogden) dropped in a season-high 31 points, knocking down seven three-point field goals against the Miners. That effort gives Michael 61 points in two career games against Missouri S&T. He had 30 points in the Bearcats' 108-105 overtime triumph over the Miners during the 2015-16 campaign.Â
Justin Blanks (Barberton, OH/Norton) came off the bench to add 25 points in Saturday's loss at Missouri S&T, while
Darin Winkelman (Steeleville, IL/Steeleville) posted 12 points and five assists.
David Franklin (O'Fallon, IL/Althoff Catholic) contributed 10 points, six rebounds and six assists in the effort.Â
William Jewell is 7-15 on the year and, like McKendree, is 3-11 against conference foes. The Cardinals split a pair of games over the weekend, falling 90-80 at the University of Indianapolis before slugging their way past Saint Joseph's College in overtime on Saturday, 117-114. In that contest, all five William Jewell starters scored in double figures, led by a 31-point effort from Patrick Whelan. Jorge Perez-Lanam added 27 points and five assists in the win for the Cardinals.Â
Whelan is averaging 20.5 PPG for William Jewell, which is currently second in the GLVC. Perez-Lanam is second on the squad in scoring at 14 PPG, while he leads the Cardinals with 87 assists. Emil Ostafiicuic paces William Jewell in rebounding at 6.6 RPG, a figure that places him 10th in the league. Ostafiicuic is also second in the GLVC in field goal percentage, knocking down 63.6 percent from the floor.Â
Two of the all-time wins leaders in college basketball history will meet in Monday's match-up. McKendree's
Harry Statham is the all-time wins leader in college basketball history with 1,110 victories entering the contest. William Jewell's Larry Holley currently sits 10th on the all-time wins list in men's college basketball history and boasts 884 victories.Â
McKendree is looking for its third consecutive win over William Jewell. The Bearcats posted a 69-58 win during the 2015-16 season which followed a 79-72 triumph in 2014-15. Both victories came at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center.Â
Following the William Jewell contest, McKendree will head east next weekend for games at Bellarmine University on Thursday and at the University of Southern Indiana on Saturday.
