(Lebanon, Ill., March 24) – The McKendree University softball team split its Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) doubleheader against Truman State University this afternoon dropping a 10-1 decision before posting a 8-2 victory.
With the split, McKendree moves to 16-11 overall and 3-3 in GLVC play.
Game One: Truman 10 McKendree 1
The Bulldogs jumped on the scoreboard in the first as Jamie Fowle hit a solo homerun to give Truman State a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs would add another in the second and three in the third to increase the lead to 5-0. Truman would find two more runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to seal the Bulldog victory.
McKendree rallied back in the sixth inning as
Dani Schoenbacher (Tamaroa, Ill./Pinckeyville) singled to drive in
Jill Norton (Foristell, MO/Francis Howell ). The Bearcat rally however was not enough to extend the game.
Kylee Silliman (Fremont, IA/Oskaloosa ) moves to 6-3 on the 2017 campaign as she went two innings recording one strikeout.
Maci Ingram (Woodlawn, Ill./Nashville Community ) came in relief for Silliman providing 2.2 innings of work.
Brooke Gajewski (Kronenwetter, Wis./D.C. Everest) wrapped up the game for McKendree in 1.1 innings of relief.
Game Two: McKendree 8 Truman 2
McKendree bounced back in game two as Gajewski opened up the first inning with an RBI single to drive in
Rachel Hastings (Forsyth, Ill./Maroa-Forsyth ). In the second,
Caitlyn Lowry (St. Louis, MO/Notre Dame ) took advantage of a Bulldog error to drive in
Abbie Bailey (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew ) to give McKendree a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning,
Jamie Doggendorf (Dittmer, Mo./Northwest) took Lauren Dale of Truman State deep to give the Bearcats a 4-0 lead.
Gajewski followed in the third with a solo shot to increase the lead to 5-0. Schoenbacher joined the action with a two-run homerun to add to the McKendree lead. Lowry topped off the rally with an RBI single driving in Bailey.
The Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the fourth on a sac fly.
Holly Magre (Festus, Mo./St. Pius X) improves to 9-5 as she went the distance for the Bearcats striking out one, while only surrounding three hits.
The Softball team is back in action on Sunday as the team welcomes Quincy University to Bearcat Field for a GLVC doubleheader starting at noon.
