(ST. PETERS, Mo., Mar. 25) – The McKendree University women's water polo team earned two wins in Collegiate Water Polo Association Midwest Division play on Saturday, defeating the University of Cincinnati by a score of 19-1, and Saint Louis University by a score of 21-0.
GAME ONE
McKendree came out strong in the first quarter, outscoring their opponents 10-0. Freshman attacker
Catie Young (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos High School) stole the ball from a Cincinnati defender, and lofted a shot over the goaltender for the first goal of the game. Freshman attacker
Brianna Mullalley (Chula Vista, CA/Eastlake High School) scored her first goal of the game on a counter attack, skipping one past the Cincinnati goalie. Junior attacker
Sabrina Sherrin (San Jose, CA/West Valley Junior College) netted McKendree's next two goals, to take a 4-0 lead. Freshman attacker
Valerie Sorondo (Orlando, FL/Lake Nona High School) scored her first goal of the game after firing a shot that beat the Cincinnati goalkeeper. Mullalley netted her second goal of the game, which was quickly followed up by Sherrin's third, and then Mullalley's third on the counter attack. Freshman utility player
Victoria Jones (Lodi, CA/Tokay High School) found the back of the net near the end of the quarter to give McKendree a 9-0 lead. Freshman attacker
Kate Eckert (Bainbridge, WA/Bainbridge Island High School) capped of the first quarter with her third goal of the season.
McKendree continued the goal scoring onslaught in the second quarter, outscoring their opponent 7-1 in the second quarter. Mullalley opened the scoring in the second quarter, netting her fourth goal of the game. Sherrin scored shortly after, also finding the back of the net for a fourth time in the game. Next, Eckert scored her second of the game, marking her first multi-goal game of the season. Cincinnati went on to score their only goal of the game in the quarter, but McKendree kept scoring with Sherrin notching a man-up goal for her fifth of the game. Jillian Hoffman (Prospect Heights, IL) would each find the back of the net before the close of the second quarter, to take a 17-1 lead into halftime.
The two teams went scoreless through the third quarter, but Sorondo scored her second of the game on a man-up opportunity in the fourth quarter. Hoffman closed out the scoring in the game netting her second goal to give McKendree a 19-1 victory over the University of Cincinnati.
GAME TWO
The Bearcats continued to display their scoring prowess in the second game, outscoring Saint Louis University 8-0 after the first quarter. Sherrin opened up the scoring on a counter to give McKendree a 1-0 lead, she would go on to find the back of the net three more times in the quarter. Freshman center defender
Tiana Wilson ( Orange County, CA/Mt. San Antonio College), Young, and Jones each notched one goal before the close of the quarter to give McKendree the 8-0 lead.
The second quarter saw five more goals for the Bearcats, including two more from Mullalley. Sherrin, Jones, and Young each found the back of the net once before half time to give the Bearcats a 13-0 lead.
The Bearcats opened the third quarter with Eckert firing two shots that beat the Billikens goaltender to put McKendree up 15-0. Wilson scored her second of the contest in the quarter, marking her first multi-goal game of the season. Sherrin capped off the scoring in the quarter with her sixth goal of the game.
McKendree continued to score in the fourth quarter with Mullalley scoring twice, along with goals from Sherrin, Young, and Jones. The Bearcats took their second victory of the day, defeating the Billikens 21-0.
STATS
The Bearcats netted 40 goals on the afternoon. Sherrin led the team with 11 goals on the day. Mullalley found the back of the net nine times, Jones and Eckert each scored five, and Young netted four. Hoffman, Wilson, and Sorondo each notched two goals on the day. Freshman goaltenders
Gabby Madewell (Portland, OR/Parkrose High School) and
Kim Fay (Lake Oswego, OR) split time in the cage, with each playing two quarters per game. Madewell made seven blocks on the afternoon allowing just one goal. Fay shut out the opposing teams, blocking four shots.
The Bearcats are back in action for two games on Sunday morning at the St. Peters Rec Plex in St. Peters, Mo. McKendree takes on the University of Notre Dame at 9:40 a.m., followed up by a matchup with Lindenwood University at 1:10 p.m.
