(NOTRE DAME, Ind., April 23) – The McKendree University women's water polo team fell to No. 1 seed Grand Valley State University on Sunday afternoon in the CWPA Midwest Division Championship Finals by a score of 6-5.
The McKendree women's water polo inaugural season concludes with a second place finish in the CWPA Midwest Division. The Bearcats close out the season with an overall record of 9-16, including a record of 9-2 in Midwest Division play.
The Bearcats took an early lead in the game, scoring three times in the first quarter and allowing just one goal against. Freshman attacker
Brianna Mullalley (Chula Vista, CA/Eastlake High School) netted the first two goals for McKendree, with junior attacker
Sabrina Sherrin (San Jose, CA/West Valley Junior College) scoring the third. Heading into the second quarter the Bearcats held a 3-1 lead, but were held off the scoreboard as Grand Valley State scored twice to even the score before half time. McKendree regained the lead in the third quarter with freshman utility player
Victoria Jones (Lodi, CA/Tokay High School) and Sherrin each scoring once, and the Lakers netting one of their own. At the end of the third quarter McKendree held a 5-4 lead. The Bearcats couldn't hold off the Lakers, who would score twice while fending off the McKendree attack. Grand Valley eventually took home the 6-5 victory over McKendree, along with the CWPA Midwest Division Championship.
Mullalley and Sherrin each found the back of the net twice in the game and Jones scored once. Guarding the cage for the Bearcats was freshman goalie
