(Lebanon, Ill., Sept. 29) -- The McKendree women's volleyball team improved to 10-3 on the season, following their ninth straight win on Friday night. The Bearcats defeated the University of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles in a clean sweep (25-17, 25-18, 25-18). The victory also improves McKendree to 5-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
The Bearcats were led by reigning GLVC Offensive Player of the Week
Amanda Geiger (Tomball, TX/Concordia Lutheran). The senior from Tomball, TX put down 16 kills, and hit .382. Senior outside hitter
Arela Williams (San Diego, CA/LaJolla Country Day) added nine kills of her own, while
Megan Marks (Colgate, WI/Germantown) had seven.
Sophomore
Kelly Voss (St. Rose, IL/Mater Dei) set a personal season-high for digs in a three-set match with 19. Junior setter
Morgan Melchert (Mt. Vernon, IA/Mt. Vernon) collected 34 assists and 11 digs. Outside hitter
Elle Russell (Festus, MO/St. Pius X) contributed six kills and eight digs, while senior middle
Carissa Lorenz (New Lenox, IL/Lincoln-Way West) put away five blocks.
McKendree jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first set, with three different Bearcats collecting at least one kill. The Screaming Eagles were able to cut the deficit to two points, but then McKendree cruised to a 25-17 first set win.
The second set was all McKendree, as they scored the first nine points of the set, on their way to a 25-18 set victory, with freshman
Elle Russell (Festus, MO/St. Pius X) finishing it off with a kill. The third set was much of the same, as the Bearcats built an early 7 point advantage, and took the set 25-18 to sweep the Screaming Eagles.
