(LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 31)--The McKendree University women's basketball team will be on the road this week for a pair of important Great Lakes Valley Conference games. The Bearcats will head east on Thursday to open up their two-game road swing at the University of Indianapolis before heading north to finish off the weekend with a match-up on Saturday at Lewis University.
McKendree enters the week with an 8-9 overall record and a 4-6 mark in GLVC play. The Bearcats currently sit ninth in the new GLVC point rating system at 2.85. Thursday's opponent, UIndy, sits right in front of McKendree in the No. 8 spot at 3.05. The top eight teams in the final rating on Feb. 24 will earn a spot in the field for the conference tournament March 1-4 in Edwardsville, Ill.
The Bearcats are coming off a 74-62 setback on Saturday at home against No. 20-ranked Southern Indiana. McKendree held a 28-16 edge in bench scoring in the contest and forced 20 turnovers by the visiting Screaming Eagles used a decisive third-quarter run to pull away and record the win. Sydney Diekhoff continued her strong play of late, coming off the bench to lead the Bearcats with 18 points. Diekhoff has taken over the team lead in scoring in GLVC-only play, averaging 12.7 PPG in McKendree's 10 league contests to date. During the Bearcats' three-game home stand, Diekhoff averaged 17.3 PPG and has scored in double figures in five of her last six games.
Jordan Morton has seen her team-leading rebound average soar to 7.6 RPG thanks to her work on the glass in the month of January. In the Bearcats' eight games during the month, Morton pulled down 9.1 RPG. She is currently eighth in the GLVC in rebounding, but fifth in GLVC-only play on the boards at exactly nine rebounds per outing.
After its two-game road trip this week, McKendree will return to the Harry M. Statham Sports Center for its final three home games of the 2017-18 season, beginning with a league game on Thursday, Feb. 8 against Bellarmine University.
ABOUT UINDY
The Greyhounds are 7-14 overall and 4-7 in GLVC play. UIndy snapped a mini two-game losing streak on Saturday with a 56-53 victory at the University of Illinois Springfield. The Greyhounds average just 62.5 points per game, but they have the second-leading scorer in conference play -- and fifth-leading scorer in NCAA DIvision II -- in Martha Burse, who is posting 22.2 points per contest. Burse leads the GLVC with 72 total steals and a 3.7 SPG average. She has scored in double figures in all but one of UIndy's first 21 games this season. Devin Ferguson and Alexa Bailey each have 55 assists to share team-high honors, while Bailey has added 39 steals of her own.
McKendree and UIndy met just once last season, with that game coming on Jan. 19, 2017 inside the Statham Center. The Greyhounds outscored the Bearcats 11-2 in the second quarter, which proved to be a key factor in UIndy's 62-51 win. Jordan Heberg led McKendree with 12 points in the contest, while
Ellie Pusheck (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) added 11 points and
Shannon McGinnis (Niles, Ill./Trinity) pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
