(LEBANON, Ill., Nov. 16)--The McKendree University women's basketball team will play its second home contest of the week Saturday afternoon when Davenport University makes the trip to Lebanon for non-conference play. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center. The contest will also be carried live on the Bearcat Sports Network at
www.mckbearcats.com/mckendree, beginning with the pre-game show at 12:50 p.m.
The opening contest of McKendree's two-game home stand was a successful one for the Bearcats as they registered a 74-47 win over Upper Iowa University. McKendree, which improved to 2-1 on the year, rode the strength of a decisive third quarter to victory over the Peacocks. The Bearcats outscored the visitors 31-8 in the period while holding Upper Iowa to just 1-of-7 shooting (14.3 percent). McKendree forced 30 turnovers in the win, nine of which came in the third quarter alone.
Four different McKendree players scored in double figures on Wednesday. Junior guards
Jordan Heberg (Romeoville, IL/Plainfield North) and
Madison Hart (Oak Creek, WI/Oak Creek) each connected for 12 points to lead the balanced attack, while sophomore guard
Sydney Diekhoff (Pekin, IL/Pekin Community) and freshman guard
Jenna Krause (Seymour, WI/Seymour) each contributed 10 points. Senior forward
Jordan Morton (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds as freshman guard
Haley Zylka (Oak Creek, WI/Oak Creek) dished out four assists for the Bearcats.
Diekhoff leads McKendree in scoring at 16 points per game. Heberg is next at 12.7 PPG, while junior forward
Megan Jensen (Union, MO/Saint Francis Borgia Regional) is also averaging in double figures at 10.7 PPG. Morton paces the Bearcats in both rebounding (8.3 RPG) and steals (8). Sophomore guard
Callie Pohlman (Appleton, WI/Appleton North) has handed out a team-best 16 assists while Diekhoff is next with 12.
Through three games, McKendree is second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in assists, averaging 20 per contest. The Bearcats also have 38 steals and hold a rebounding advantage of five boards per game against their opponents.
Following Saturday's game with Davenport, McKendree will hit the road for its next three contests, beginning with a trip to Jefferson City, Mo., on Wednesday for non-conference action at Lincoln University.
ABOUT DAVENPORT
The Panthers are 1-1 on the season, splitting a pair of games last weekend in Grand Rapids, Mich., against GLVC foes. Davenport have not played since Nov. 10 in a 71-64 home loss to Maryville University. Taylor Opolka is the lone Panther player averaging in double figures at 17.5 PPG. She is shooting better than 65 percent from the field. Opolka is also the team's leading rebounder at 10 RPG. Amanda Merz has dished out 10 assists in Davenport's first two contests.
McKendree and Davenport met for the first time back on Dec. 30, 2017 in Michigan.
Madison Hart (Oak Creek, WI/Oak Creek) dropped in a game-high 18 points to lead the Bearcats to a 73-53 win over the Panthers.
Jordan Heberg (Romeoville, IL/Plainfield North) contributed 13 points while
Shayli Florine (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg) added 12 points and six rebounds in a reserve role for the Bearcats.
