(JEFFERSONVILLE, IN, Nov. 2) – The McKendree University men's soccer team was defeated 1-0 by the Knights of Bellarmine University Friday afternoon and were consequentially eliminated from the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Championship Tournament.
The Bearcats were outshot by Bellarmine 19 to seven with each putting four shots on goal. The Knights scored the only goal of the match in the 57
th minute of play after Bellarmine midfielder Greg Fischer successfully netted a penalty kick attempt. Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper
Alvaro Cortazar (Asuncion, Paraguay/Santa Teresa de Jesus) made three saves.
This has been a remarkable season for the Bearcats after initially being selected to finish 13
th in the GLVC standings. McKendree would go on to achieve a 8-4-1 GLVC record and reach the final four in its program-first GLVC Chapionship Tournament appearance.
The men's soccer team will have to wait until this upcoming Monday's NCAA selection show to find out their continued post-season fate. Currently ranked fifth in the NCAA Midwest Region, the Bearcats will have to be selected as one of the top six teams from the region to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
