(QUINCY, Ill., March 2)—The McKendree University baseball team opened a four-game series at Quincy University with a 6-4 loss to the host Hawks.
 
Quincy, ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division II, built a 6-1 lead after four innings, but the Bearcats plated three runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally back. McKendree brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth and ninth innings, but could not even the contest. The Bearcats move to 1-7 overall and will face the Hawks in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday, with first pitch set for noon.
 
Junior infielder Matt Klosterman paced the McKendree offense with three hits while scoring a run. Senior infielder Jeff Wetzler belted a pinch-hit, two-run home run in the three-run seventh inning outburst, while junior outfielder Levi Brening also rapped out a pair of hits for the Bearcats. Junior outfielder Corey Chambliss also blasted a solo home run in the contest for McKendree.
 
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, when Quincy (3-4) exploded for four runs to grab a 4-0 advantage. Chambliss led off the top of the fourth inning with his first homer in a McKendree uniform to trim the deficit to 4-1. The Hawks answered with single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth frames to extend their lead to 6-1.
 
In the top of the seventh inning, junior infielder Drake Hampton led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Klosterman delivered an RBI single to plate Hampton and bring McKendree within 6-2.
 
Wetzler came up next as a pinch-hitter and belted his first home run of the year, a two-run shot to score Klosterman and get the Bearcats within 6-4.
 
McKendree mounted a rally in the eighth as Hampton reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on a passed ball, but could not score. Brening singled with two outs in the ninth inning to bring the tying run to the plate, but the Hawks worked out of the jam to close out the win.
 
Senior right-hander Nick Yung scattered seven hits over four innings in taking the loss for McKendree. Yung allowed three earned runs and struck out three.
