#25 McKendree Sweeps Doubleheader with Quincy at Home

(Lebanon, Ill., March 30) -- McKendree University softball has won nine games in a row, following a sweep of the Quincy University Hawks on Friday afternoon, and are now tied for first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings with the University of Indianapolis. The #25 nationally ranked Bearcats improve to 24-7 overall and 10-2 in conference play.

In game one of the doubleheader, senior Brooke Gajewski singled to score two runs in the bottom of the third inning, following a double steal by sophomore Abbie Bailey (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew) and freshman Haegen Boyer (Eddyville, IA/Eddyville). McKendree added an insurance run in the sixth on its way to the 3-0 victory over the Hawks. Freshman Miranda Gajewski (Kronenwetter, WI/D.C. Everest) threw a complete game shut-out, allowing just five hits and two free passes to secure the win, improving to 14-1 on the season.

In series finale, Quincy was unable to capitalize on offense, manufacturing just two runs on nine hits. The Bearcats used a four run burst in the fourth inning to take the lead, but the Hawks responded with two in top of the fifth, cutting the lead in half. The Bearcats added one of their own in the fifth and two more in the sixth, holding Quincy scoreless in the final two inning to secure the sweep.

Miranda Gajewski (Kronenwetter, WI/D.C. Everest) had three hits and two RBI's in the 7-2 win, including a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. The Bearcats produced nine hits, with freshman Konnor Arrowood (Fulton, MO/South Callaway) picking up the win, giving up six hits and no walks in five inning pitched, while junior Maci Ingram (Woodlawn, Ill./Nashville Community) came in relief to secure the final four outs. The stought McKendree defense commited only two errors through 14 innings of play in the winning effort.

The Bearcats will return home tomorrow for a GLVC doubleheader against the University of Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars. Game time is scheduled for noon and 2 pm at Bearcat Field on the campus of McKendree University in Lebanon.
