(LIBERTY, Mo., March 9)—The McKendree University baseball team kicked off a three-game series at William Jewell College on Friday with an 8-1 victory.
Senior right-hander carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and allowed just one run on one hit over six innings to collect his first victory of the season. McKendree improves to 3-9 on the season and will take on the Cardinals in a doubleheader on Saturday set for an 11 a.m. first pitch. Yung combined with junior right-hander Brian Christianson for a two-hitter against William Jewell.
Yung was buoyed by a 15-hit attack from the Bearcats in Friday's win. Junior outfielder Levi Brening led the charge with four hits on the day, including three doubles and a triple. Brening also scored three runs in the effort. Freshman catcher Austin Francis delivered a three-run double to highlight a five-run third inning outburst. Francis finished with two hits, as did junior infielders Matt Klosterman, Luke Johnson and Andrew Aydt. Junior outfielder Corey Chambliss also drove in a pair of runs for the Bearcats.
McKendree led from start to finish, grabbing a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. With one out, Johnson laced a double to right-center field and came around to score on the first of Brening's three doubles against William Jewell. The Bearcats then sent 10 batters to the plate during its five-run third inning. Johnson started things with a single and reached third on a double by Brening.
Chambliss stepped in next and produced an RBI single to bring home Johnson with the first run of the frame. McKendree then loaded the bases when Francis came to the plate and delivered his bases-clearing double to extend the Bearcats' lead to 5-0. Francis scored thanks to an RBI single by Klosterman to cap the inning and give McKendree a 6-0 lead.
Brening tripled to lead off the fourth inning and Aydt followed with an RBI double to push the McKendree lead to 7-0. The Bearcats then scratched out an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning for an eight-run cushion.
Meanwhile, Yung kept the William Jewell hitters off balance for the first 5 2/3 innings. Yung's no-hit bid was broken up by Trent Bollman's RBI single to give the Cardinals their lone run of the contest. In his six innings of work, Yung struck out eight batters while walking two. Christianson worked the final three innings, giving up just one hit, to earn his first save in a McKendree uniform.
