Bearcats Defeated Twice to Open GLVC Series at Southern Indiana

(EVANSVILLE, Ind., April 28)—The McKendree University baseball team dropped both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the University of Southern Indiana. The host Screaming Eagles registered a 16-2 win in the opener before holding off a late rally from the Bearcats in game two, 4-3.

McKendree moves to 7-33 overall and 2-15 in the GLVC. The Bearcats and Screaming Eagles will close out their four-game weekend series with another doubleheader on Sunday, with first pitch slated for noon.

Junior outfielders Corey Chambliss and Drew Reich each had three hits on the day against USI. Junior infielder Drake Hampton hit safely in each contest, including the Bearcats' lone home run of the day in game one. Junior infielder Luke Johnson scored twice on the day for McKendree.

Saturday's second game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Southern Indiana (24-17) 11-7 GLVC) scratched across a run in the frame to take a 1-0 lead. McKendree answered with a run of its own in the top of the fifth to knot the score at 1-1. Hampton reached on a one-out single and moved to second base on a fielder's choice. Freshman catcher Connor McCormick stepped in next and ripped an RBI single to plate Hampton with the Bearcats' first run of the contest.

The Screaming Eagles battled right back and scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to regain a 4-1 lead. In the top of the sixth, Johnson led off with a walk and came around to score when junior first baseman Andrew Aydt delivered an RBI double to trim the McKendree deficit to 4-2. The Bearcats then put together one final rally in the top of the seventh. McCormick walked with one out and raced home on senior infielder Jeff Wetzler's RBI double. Wetzler reached third on a wild pitch but the Screaming Eagles induced a game-ending double play to preserve the win.

In the opener, USI took a 1-0 lead in the second before McKendree tied the game in the top of the sixth. Johnson reached on a bunt single and came around to score thanks to a two-out, run-scoring double off the bat of Aydt to help the Bearcats pull even at 1-1. Southern Indiana then took the lead for good with a seven-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth to build an 8-1 advantage. McKendree's final run of game one came in the top of the seventh when Hampton belted a solo home run over the left field fence to bring the Bearcats within 8-2. It was Hampton's first home run of the 2018 season for McKendree.
