(BOLIVAR, MO., Sep 2) – The McKendree University men's soccer team comes home with their first win of the season after defeating Southwest Baptist 4-1 Sunday in Bolivar, MO.
 
The Bearcats opened scoring for the match in the 24^th minute when sophomore forward James Stone (Eastbourne, England/Bede's Senior School) notched his first goal of the season. After back and forth play, the first half finished with a score of 1-0.
 
The second half included a barrage of scoring, beginning with another Stone goal, this time courtesy of a penalty kick in the 72^nd minute of play. Late into the half, in the 86^th minute, Southwest Baptist's Isaiah Waddy brought the home team within one goal, however, the momentum was short lived. Just over one minute later, McKendree's Eddie Davis (Arundel, England/Amersham College) crossed a corner kick that found the boot of Sam Liddington (Northampton, England/St. Charles Community College), extending the lead to 3-1, although this would not be the final shot attempt for McKendree. In the final minute of regulation, senior defender Luke Schlichting (Perryville, MO/Perryville High School) put the final goal past the SBU goalkeeper off of an assist from Stone.
 
Defensively, Southwest Baptist's goalkeeper Will vanHoornbeek finished with five saves while McKendree's Alvaro Cortazar (Asuncion, Paraguay/Santa Teresa de Jesus) finished with three saves.
 
Men's soccer will return to action on September 7^th at 7:30 p.m. for their home opener against Oakland City University.
