(LEBANON, Ill., Jan .23)--The McKendree University women's basketball team will hit the road for a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference match-ups this week. The Bearcats will first visit Quincy, Ill., for a Thursday night contest at Quincy University. Following an off-day, McKendree will close out its short road trip Saturday afternoon at Truman State University.
McKendree enters the week at 9-7 overall and 3-4 in GLVC play. The Bearcats picked up an important 76-63 victory in their last game Saturday afternoon at home against Missouri S&T. McKendree dominated the fourth quarter against the Miners, holding a scoring edge of 18-6 in the final period while holding Missouri S&T to just 3-of-11 from the field over the last 10 minutes. In turn, the Bearcats connected on 66.7 percent of their tries from the floor in the fourth quarter (8-of-12) to pull away for the win.
Jordan Heberg (Romeoville, IL/Plainfield North) lead four McKendree players in double figures with 15 points.
Jordan Morton (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) registered her third double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds against Missouri S&T.
Sydney Diekhoff (Pekin, IL/Pekin Community), who had 11 points in Saturday's win, continues to lead the Bearcats in scoring at 15.7 PPG. Diekhoff is currently fifth in the conference in scoring. Heberg (11.1 PPG) and
Megan Jensen (Union, MO/Saint Francis Borgia Regional) (10.1 PPG) round out the list od fouble-digit scorers for McKendree. Morton paces the Bearcats with 8.3 rebounds per game, a figure that places her sixth among all GLVC players in the category.
Callie Pohlman (Appleton, WI/Appleton North) has pushed her team-leading assist total to 60, and she is tied for sixth in the league in assists per game at 3.75 APG. Jensen is second in the GLVC in field goal percentage, hitting 60.7 percent of her shots from the field.
As a team, McKendree ranks third in the conference in rebounding offense, pulling down just over 40 boards per outing. The Bearcats are also third in the league in three-point field goal defense, limiting their opponents to just 28.3 percent from beyond the arc. McKendree is second among all GLVC squads in rebounding margin.
After its two-game northern swing, McKendree will return to the Statham Center next week to host the University of Indianapolis on Jan. 31 and Lewis University on Feb. 2.
ABOUT QUINCY
The Hawks bring a 5-12 overall record and a 3-5 mark into Thursday night's contest with McKendree. Quincy snapped a four-game winless streak on Saturday with a 77-65 win at home against the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Maddie Spagnola poured in a game-high 29 points to lead the offensive attack for the Hawks.
Spagnola leads the way for Quincy this season at 13.9 PPG. She has also dished out a team-best 39 assists. Michaela Gronewold has chipped in 11.5 PPG and has made a team-leading 28 three-point field goals in 15 games for the Hawks. Gronewold is also shooting 94.7 percent from the foul line. Grace Schraufnagel is Quincy's leading rebounder this season at 5.1 RPG.
McKendree swept the 2017-18 season series against Quincy. The Bearcats battled to a 55-44 win over the Hawks on Jan. 18, 2018 in Lebanon before completing the sweep with an 82-73 triumph in the regular-season finale on Feb. 24, 2018 in Quincy, Ill.
ABOUT TRUMAN STATE
The Bulldogs have been sitting near the top of the GLVC standings all season. Truman State is 15-3 on the year and 6-2 in league play heading into its Thursday night meeting at home against the University of Illinois Springfield. The Bulldogs saw their four-game win streak end with an 85-78 setback last Saturday at home against Maryville University. Four different Truman State players scored in double figures, led by a 16-point effort from Katie Jaseckas.
Brooke Bailey paces a balanced attack for the Bulldogs at 11.3 PPG. Bailey also leads Truman State with 60 assists and is tied for the team lead with 20 steals. Rachel Edmundson (11.1 PPG) and Sloane Totta (10.3 PPG) also score in double digits for the Bulldogs. Maddie Re has pulled down a team-best 8.3 rebounds per game for Truman State, which is fifth in the GLVC, just in front of McKendree's
Jordan Morton (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South). Jaseckas is shooting 52.4 percent from the floor, which is good for seventh in the conference.
McKendree and Truman State met just once on the basketball court during the 2017-18 season. On Dec. 7, 2017 at the Statham Center, the visiting Bulldogs posted a 76-62 win over the Bearcats.
