"(Bellarmine) was better than we were tonight," said McKendree head coach
Scott Gyllenborg. "We had some guys who didn't show up tonight and it showed on the field. This may be a good lesson heading into the next stage. We had a good start, but just didn't sustain tonight."
McKendree struck first exactly 15 minutes into the first half. Junior midfielder
James Stone (Eastbourne, England/Bede's Senior School) won scramble for a loose ball at the top of the box and buried a shot into the back of the net. Sophomore midfielder Diego Tapia-Freites picked up the assist on Stone's goal. Bellarmine answered just over midway through the half on a head off a corner kick to pull even at 1-1.
The contest remained tied until the opening moments of the second half when the Knights' Collin Rose scored to put Bellarmine in front at 2-1. The Knights struck again with just under 11 minutes remaining to build a two-goal advantage.
Sophomore midfielder
Melo de Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil) breathed life into the Bearcats' hopes in the 89
th minute when he took a crossing pass from senior defender
Javi Soto (Santiago, Chile) and deflected it just inside the right post to bring McKendree within 3-2. The Bearcats looked to mount a last-minute attack, but Bellarmine's defense held off the late charge to claim the victory.
Junior
Pachu Cortazar (Asuncion, Paraguay/Santa Teresa de Jesus) made four saves in goal for McKendree. For the contest, Bellarmine held a 15-6 edge in total shots, putting seven on goal against the Bearcats. McKendree scored on both of its shots on net against the Knights' keeper.
