(LEBANON, Ill., Dec. 1)—Fresh off its split at the Fairfield Inn Classic hosted by Missouri Western State University, the McKendree University women's basketball team will return to the Harry M. Statham Sports Center Tuesday night to play host to the University of Southern Indiana. Tip-off between the Bearcats and Screaming Eagles is set for 5:30 p.m.
McKendree is off to the best start in the programs' NCAA Division II era at 5-1. The only blemish to date on the Bearcats' schedule came Friday night in a 52-50 loss to Missouri Western. McKendree was edged on a buzzer-beater after rallying to tie the game late on a three-pointer from senior guard
Jordan Heberg (Romeoville, IL/Plainfield North). The Bearcats rebounded on Saturday with a 77-69 overtime win against Northwest Missouri State, coming back from 11 down in the fourth quarter and then dominating the extra period to collect the win.
Heberg led the Bearcats against Northwest Missouri State with 20 points, including 11 in the team's fourth-quarter comeback. Senior forward
Megan Jensen (Union, MO/Saint Francis Borgia Regional) came off the bench to post 17 points and eight rebounds, while senior forward
Brianna Johnson (Lodi, WI/Beaver Dam) contributed 13 points and seven rebounds.
Six games into the 2019-20 season, Heberg leads the Bearcats in scoring at 16.3 PPG. Sophomore guard
Jenna Krause (Seymour, WI/Seymour) is the only other McKendree player scoring in double figures at 10.8 PPG. Senior guard
Madison Hart (Oak Creek, WI/Oak Creek) leads the Bearcats on the glass at 10.5 rebounds per outing and is third in scoring at nine points per contest. Junior guard
Callie Pohlman (Appleton, WI/Appleton North) has dished out a team-best 27 assists and is tied with Hart for the team lead in steals with nine.
Following Tuesday's game with Southern Indiana, McKendree will have a 10-day layoff before returning to host Columbia College (Mo.) in an exhibition contest on Friday, Dec. 13 at 6 p.m.
ABOUT SOUTHERN INDIANA
The Screaming Eagles own a 4-1 record on the season and have won their last three outings. Southern Indiana spent the weekend in Louisville, Ky., at the Bellarmine Classic and defeated Trevecca Nazarene in Saturday's contest, 83-60. Ashlynn Brown and Ashley Johnson each scored 15 points to lead a balanced attack for the Screaming Eagles. Emma DeHart and Addy Blackwell each contributed 12 points in the victory.
Johnson is the top scorer for Southern Indiana at 13.2 PPG. She is 19-of-23 from the free throw line this, hitting 82.6 percent of her tries. DeHart is next at 11.6 PPG and is hitting at an 83.3 percent clip from the stripe. Brown is the other USI player scoring in double figures this season at 10 PPG. DeHart and Brown share team-high rebounding honors at 5.4 per contest. Johnson leads the Screaming Eagles with 20 assists and 11 steals.
McKendree dropped a pair of close contests to Southern Indiana during the 2018-19 season. The Screaming Eagles slipped past the Bearcats 66-62 on Feb. 14 in Evansville, Ind., before hanging on to post a 75-73 win on March 2 in Lebanon.
