Box Score (San Juan, Puerto Rico, Dec. 17) – the McKendree women's basketball team bested the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras 73-54 to open competition in Puerto Rico. The Bearcats improve to 6-2 overall on the season.
It was a close game in the first quarter between the Bearcats and the Roosters with UPR Rio Piedras up by five on McKendree at its biggest lead. The Bearcats cleaned up their play and managed to take an eight point lead heading into halftime. McKendree maintained the lead throughout the remainder of the game, winning 73-54.
The Bearcats were able to capitalize on the Roosters' turnovers, scoring 20 of their 73 points off of UPR Rio Piedras turnovers. McKendree also had more second chance points in comparison to the Roosters, 23-4.
Leading scorer for the Bearcats was senior guard
Jordan Heberg (Romeoville, IL/Plainfield North) with 17 points. With her 17 points, Heberg is just 41 points shy of recording 1,000 career points. Heberg also tallied two assists, two steals, and six rebounds for McKendree.
Other impact players for the Bearcats were sophomore guard
Jenna Krause (Seymour, WI/Seymour) and senior forward
Madison Hart (Oak Creek, WI/Oak Creek). Krause led the team in steals with four while also collecting three rebounds, five assists, and 12 points for McKendree. Hart led the team in rebounds with nine as well as scoring 11 points and earning two steals.
McKendree will continue competition in Puerto Rico with a game on Thursday against the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
