(ROMEOVILLE, Ill., April, 17) – The McKendree University men's volleyball team lost in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA), 3-0 to Lewis University. The Bearcats finish out the season 13-13 overall.
McKendree dropped the opening set 25-17. The Bearcats came out stronger and more competitive in set two but fell to the Flyers, 25-21. With momentum on its side, Lewis claimed the 3-0 victory with a 25-17 win in the third set.
Sophomore outside hitter
Ethan Carroll (Barrington, IL/Barrington) led the team with 12 kills followed by junior opposite
Zach Schnittker (Arlington Heights, IL/Buffalo Grove) who tallied 10 total kills. Freshman setter
Ryan Serrano (Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek) set up the Bearcats' offense 24 times in the match. The setter also went two for two on his attacks for the night.
Defensive leaders for McKendree were Serrano and senior libero
Zach Thompson (Defiance, MO/Francis Howell). Serrano led the team with six digs and Thompson followed with four. At the net for the Bearcats' defense was junior middle blocker
Lucas Galifos (Mokena,IL/Lincoln Way East), Schnittker, and Serrano. Galifos collected two block assists while Schnittker and Serrano tallied one.
The Bearcats season comes to a close with this loss MIVA Semifinal loss. The team accomplished many feats this season including beating Ohio State for the first time, defeating a No. 8 Brigham Young squad, and hosting a MIVA Quarterfinal for the first time in program history. It is a season to be proud of for the 2019 McKendree men's volleyball team.
