(LEBANON, Ill., Apr. 6) - The McKendree University softball team earned two Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) wins today after sweeping the Panthers of Drury University. The Bearcats totaled 17 runs through both games and earned their second win in walk off fashion after defeating the Panthers 5-4 after eight innings.
Game one proved to be an offensive showcase with the Bearcats winning 12-9. Drury held the lead going into the sixth inning, however McKendree would take the lead and eventual win after a three-run homer courtesy of
Abbie Bailey (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew) and a RBI single from the bat of
Samantha Cameron (Dix, Ill./Centralia, Ill.). Sophomore
Miranda Gajewski (Kronenwetter, WI/D.C. Everest) went 3-3 at the plate, hitting a home-run of her own as well as hitting in four RBIs.
The Bearcats led for the majority of game two, securing a 3-0 advantage over the Panthers going into the sixth inning. It was then that Drury put up two runs in each the top of the sixth and seventh innings, gaining the lead with one guaranteed at-bat remaining for McKendree.
Hannah Murphy (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North) then hit a solo shot homer to tie the game up, and send the game into extra innings. Defensively, McKendree was able to keep the Panthers off the board in the top of the eighth, and secured the win on a
Megan Radae (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) RBI.
McKendree will be back in action this upcoming Wednesday, April 10 when they play host to the Saints of Maryville University in a GLVC doubleheader.
