(ST. CHARLES, Mo., May 1)—The McKendree University baseball team was defeated Wednesday afternoon by Lindenwood University in the Bearcats' final non-conference game of the 2019 regular season, 3-1.
McKendree grabbed a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat, but the Lions tied the game in the third inning and moved in front to stay in the fifth inning to complete the season sweep of the two-game series between the two soon-to-be conference foes. The Bearcats, now 11-35 overall, will host Drury University in a three-game Great Lakes Valley Conference this weekend. The teams are slated to play a doubleheader Friday before closing out the regular season with a single contest on Saturday.
Sophomore right-hander
Jacob Reinkemeyer (Wildwood, MO/Eureka) registered the longest outing of his McKendree career on Wednesday. Reinkemeyer earned the start on the mound and went 6 1/3 innings, scattering seven hits while allowing three earned runs. He walked just one batter and struck out three against Lindenwood. Senior right-hander
Kraig Gielow (Arnold, MO/DeSmet Jesuit) tossed the final 2 2/3 innings in relief of Reinkemeyer, giving up a pair of safeties while fanning one.
Seniors
Andrew Aydt (Wildwood, MO/Eureka) and
Adam Cox (Louisville, IL/North Clay) each registered two hits on the day for McKendree. Aydt had a double among his two hits while he scored the lone run in the effort for the Bearcats.
Playing as the home team in Wednesday's contest, McKendree jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Bearcats put together a two-out rally as Aydt doubled down the left-field line before senior outfielder
Drew Reich (Charlestown, IN/Charlestown) drew a walk. Lindenwood attempted to force Reich at second on a ground ball to shortstop, but an errant throw allowed Aydt to score to push McKendree to the early lead.
Lindenwood (26-21) tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning and took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth. The Bearcats looked to rally, but the Lions' pitching staff held McKendree at bay the remainder of the contest.
