(ST. LOUIS, Mo., Sept. 28) – The McKendree University men's club water polo team dropped its first two games of a four-game weekend on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats dropped a 9-7 decision to Washington University in St. Louis, and a 9-5 loss to Lindenwood University.
McKendree moves to 3-5 overall on the season. The Bearcats will look to advance to .500 on the season Sunday afternoon with a 1:00p.m. matchup with Missouri S&T and a 4:00p.m. contest with Lindenwood.
Game One
In a closely fought game between the Bearcats and Bears, Washington University in St. Louis narrowly edged McKendree 9-7. The opening period proved to be the difference as the Bears held a two goal lead after eight minutes.
Senior
Jarad Wahl (St. Louis, MO/Oakville High School) and freshman
Connor Pulido (Chicago Ridge, IL/Harold L Richards High School) paced the offense for McKendree with two goals each. Wahl was also a key part in facilitating the attack, contributing two assists.
Also scoring goals for the Bearcats were sophomores
Peter Germuska (Encinitas, CA/La Cost Canyon High School),
Kyle Moore (Whittier, CA/La Habra High School), and
Owen Martin (Flower Mound, TX/Flower Mound High School). Moore tied the team lead in assists with two.
In the cage, senior
Anthony Murat (Chicago, IL/Buffalo Grove High School) made eight saves and added three steals.
Game Two
McKendree struggled to get anything going on offense in the 9-5 loss to Lindenwood. Senior
Jackson Smith (McHenry, IL/McHenry West High School) led the way on the offensive end with two goals. Sophomore
Joe Fitzgerald (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew High School), Germuska, and Pulido contributed the other three goals.
Wahl and Smith both dished out a single assist apiece.
Murat made 14 saves in the cage.
