(LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 11) – The McKendree University women's basketball team fell 56-45 to the University of Indianapolis Saturday. The Bearcats are now 7-6 overall on the season.
With a two point bucket in the 25
th minute of play,
Jordan Heberg (Romeoville, IL/Plainfield North) became just the 15
th person in program history to hit the 1,000 career point mark. Heberg led the offensive efforts today for the Bearcats with 11 points and sits atop of the point leaderboard for McKendree on the season with 188 points.
The Bearcats were slow to start, only shooting 28.57 percent from the field goal position and zero from three from behind the arch. From there, McKendree rebounded and nearly doubled its shooting average for field goals in the second quarter. By the end of the game, the Bearcats acquired better shooting percentages in field goals, three pointers, and free throws than UIndy.
In both the second and third quarter the Bearcats were able to pull within three points of the Greyhounds. Senior forward
Shayli Florine (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg) drained two back-to-back baskets to get McKendree within reach of Indianapolis in the second quarter. In the third quarter, the Bearcats scored nine straight points to cut the Greyhounds lead to 39-36 heading into the fourth. With eight minutes left in the game, senior guard
Madison Hart (Oak Creek, WI/Oak Creek) sank a three point basket to get the Bearcats just one point away from the Greyhounds but the late comeback was not enough, as Indianapolis went on to win 56-45.
Hart recorded double-digit rebounds for the second consecutive game with 11 to lead the Bearcats defensive. Florine, senior forward
Megan Jensen (Union, MO/Saint Francis Borgia Regional), and junior guard
Callie Pohlman (Appleton, WI/Appleton North)n were also essential rebounders for McKendree, each tallying five. Hart and Jensen each recorded a block in the game as well to support the defense.
McKendree will head west for its next Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) game to take on William Jewell and Rockhurst. The game against the Cardinals is set for Thursday, Jan. 16 at 5:30 p.m. and the game against the Hawks is on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 1:00 p.m.
