KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 18) – The McKendree University men's basketball team fell to Rockhurst 82-79 Saturday afternoon in Kansas City, Mo. The Bearcats are now 9-6 overall on the season and 4-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).
Junior guard
Oliver Stephen (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) went three for three from the three point line, tallying nine points within the first five minutes of play. The tables slowly turned and the Hawks managed a hot streak of their own going nine for 15 or 60 percent behind the three point line in the first half. The sharp shooting allowed Rockhurst a 45-34 lead over McKendree at halftime.
McKendree was down by 17 at the largest deficit of the second half but made a six point run, holding the Hawks scoreless for 1:48, marking the Bearcats turning point of the half. The Bearcats outscored the Hawks in the second half 45-37 but their comeback was cut just short by just three points in the end 82-79.
Three Bearcats recorded doudble-digit points in the game. Senior guard
Logan Kohrmann (Bartelso, IL/Breese Central) led the team in points and rebounds with 21 points and nine rebounds. Freshman forward
Bryson Bultman (Nashville, IL/Nashville) was next for the Bearcats, tallying 17 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Junior guard
Oliver Stephen (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) was the final Bearcat athlete to record double digit points with 12.
As a team, McKendree managed more points off of turnovers and fast breaks than the Hawks. The Bearcats scored 16 points off of turnovers compared to Rockhurst's 12 and tallied 12 fast break points while not allowing any fast break points for the Hawks.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Monday for a game at Southern Indiana in Evansville, Ind., on Jan. 20. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
