Sharp Shooting Pushes McKendree Past Quincy 95-73

(LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 23) – The McKendree University men's basketball team earned a 95-73 victory over Quincy Thursday night. The Bearcats improve to 10-7 overall on the season and 5-4 in Great Lakes Valley Conference competition.

The first five minutes of competition was slow for both teams with McKendree taking a 4-2 lead over Quincy at the first media timeout of the game. The Bearcats then went off, going 18 for 25 from field goal range or 72 percent, five for eight from behind the three point line or 62.50 percent, and seven for seven from the free throw line for a perfect shooting percentage in the first half.

McKendree opened the second half with a senior guard Logan Kohrmann (Bartelso, IL/Breese Central) three pointer spreading its lead to 16 over Quincy, 51-35. The Bearcats sharp shooting continued throughout the remainder of the second half. At the end of the night, McKendree shot 60.3 percent from the field goal range, 54.5 percent from behind the three point line, and finished the game perfect at the free throw line.

Four Bearcats recorded double-digit points in the victory. Kohrmann led the way with 26 points, senior guard Nate Bethel (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Louis Christian Academy) followed with 20, a new season best, freshman forward Bryson Bultman (Nashville, IL/Nashville) was next with 14, and junior guard Oliver Stephen (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) rounded out the efforts with 12. Freshman forward Jakobie Robinson (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) and sophomore forward Luke Hensler (Okawville, IL/Okawville) were also impact offensive players for the Bearcats, each with eight points. Robinson was also the lead assister for McKendree with seven.

Defensively, eight Bearcats recorded rebounds in the game. Bultman and Bethel fronted those efforts, with eight rebounds each on the night. Robinson was next with five rebounds. Five Bearcats also recorded blocks in the game compared to Quincy's one.

As a team, McKendree capitalized more on turnovers, scoring 21 of its 95 points off of Quincy turnovers. The Bearcats also displayed a larger presence in the paint in the game scoring 42 points in the paint while only allowing the Hawks to record 28.

McKendree will continue GLVC competition with a game against Truman State University at home on Saturday, Jan. 25. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
