McKendree Collects 68-63 Comeback Win Over Quincy

(LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 23) – The McKendree University women's basketball team earned a 68-63 come from behind victory over Quincy Thursday night. The Bearcats improve to 10-7 overall on the season and 3-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

McKendree started slow on its feet, finding itself down 12-0 early on in the first quarter. The Bearcats found their rhythm and went on a nine point run of their own to close out the first quarter, cutting the Hawks lead to 12-9. Quincy scored first in the second quarter but McKendree continued to push back. Sophomore guard Jenna Krause (Seymour, WI/Seymour) recorded a three point play with two seconds left in the half, drawing a foul on a made two point bucket and making her free throw, to tie the game up 24-24 at halftime.

The Bearcats overpowered the Hawks to take the lead for the first time in the game four minutes into the third quarter. From there, the game was either tied or a lead changed occurred nine times with McKendree coming out on top 46-43 at the end of the third quarter. The Bearcats never lost the lead in the fourth quarter, going on to win 68-63.

McKendree's offense was powered by senior guard Madison Hart (Oak Creek, WI/Oak Creek), junior guard Callie Pohlman (Appleton, WI/Appleton North), and Krause as they all recorded double-digit points in the win. Hart tallied 18, a new season best for the senior, Pohlman earned 15 points, and Krause rounded out the efforts with 11 points on the evening.

Hart also led the defensive efforts for the Bearcats with 11 rebounds, earning her third-consecutive double-double. Senior forward Shayli Florine (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg) was also an impact player for McKendree, collecting four rebounds and one block on the night. Krause and junior guard Madison Jones (Abingdon, IL/Abiingdon-Avon) also tallied one block each in the game.

As a team, the Bearcats capitalized more on turnovers than the Hawks scoring 15 of their 68 points off of Quincy turnovers. McKendree only allowed nine turnovers in the game whereas Quincy tallied 18, which proved to be costly for the Hawks.

McKendree will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 23 for a game at home against Truman State University. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
