(LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 2) – The McKendree University women's basketball team dropped its first game of 2020 to Southwest Baptist 63-58 in the Battle of the Bearcats Thursday. McKendree is now 7-3 overall on the season and 0-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).
Senior forward
Shayli Florine (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg) got McKendree on the board first with a two-point layup. Neck and neck competition ensued throughout the remainder of the first quarter of play that ended with a three-point SBU bucket to tie the game up at 12-12. Southwest Baptist went on to out-shoot McKendree in the second quarter to gain a 35-27 lead going into halftime.
McKendree put up 15 points to SBU's nine in the third quarter to cut its deficit to 44-42 heading into the fourth quarter. The Bearcats persevered in the fourth quarter to take the lead over Southwest Baptist with 6:10 remaining in the game. McKendree was not able to maintain the lead as SBU scored five unanswered points to take a four-point lead with 1:24 left to play, ultimately winning 63-58.

Callie Pohlman (Appleton, WI/Appleton North) leading the pack with ten points. Senior forward
Brianna Johnson (Lodi, WI/Beaver Dam), freshman guard
Madison Jones (Abingdon, IL/Abiingdon-Avon), and senior forward
Megan Jensen (Union, MO/Saint Francis Borgia Regional) were also key offensive players for McKendree, each tallying eight points. The other six athletes to score for McKendree were
Jordan Heberg (Romeoville, IL/Plainfield North) (7), Florine (5),
Jenna Krause (Seymour, WI/Seymour) (4),
Madison Hart (Oak Creek, WI/Oak Creek) (4),
Haley Zylka (Oak Creek, WI/Oak Creek) (2), and
Kaelyn Froebe (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln) (2).
Hart set the precedent for the Bearcats defense collecting 11 rebounds and four steals in the game. Jones and Johnson followed suit, Jones with seven rebounds and Johnson with eight.
McKendree will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 4 to take on No. 1 Drury in GLVC competition. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
