Christy Fortune (Appleton, WI/Appleton West) scores a season and career-high 33 points in Monday night's 79-63 win over Southwest Baptist.
Kari Kerkhoff and her team were hungry for their first home win of the season. The Bearcats out-shot Southwest Baptist in all three categories of field goals, three-pointers, and free throws, and held onto the lead for the majority of the contest. A little over one minute into the second quarter,
Christy Fortune (Appleton, WI/Appleton West) went on a 10-point run, and helped McKendree to extend their lead. Their biggest lead would be 12 points going into halftime. In the third quarter, McKendree saw themselves in foul trouble, but made up for it by shutting down the Southwest Baptist offense. The Bearcats capitalized in their already four-point lead going into the final quarter, up to 11 from a three-pointer by
Jenna Krause (Seymour, WI/Seymour) with 7:44 left in the game. Their biggest lead came to 18 point after good free throw from Fortune in the final seconds of the contest.
Christy Fortune (Appleton, WI/Appleton West) scored more than double the amount of points from the second-leading McKendree and leading Southwest Baptist players. Fortune recorded a season and career-high 33 points, going 13-for-16 from the floor, 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, and 4-for-6 in free throws.
Callie Pohlman (Appleton, WI/Appleton North) also finished in double-digits with 14 points, while
Jenna Krause (Seymour, WI/Seymour) added 12 points of her own.
Southwest Baptist was led by four Bearcats in double-digits. Kayleigh Vaught scored 15 points for her team, 7-for-11 in shot attempts. Megan Worthington added 12 points for the Bearcats, including 2-for-2 in free throws. While both Brylee Graddy and Mary Rose Foster scored 11 points apiece.
The Bearcats will head to Romeoville, Ill., for a Friday night matchup against the Flyers of Lewis University. Their scheduled tip-off time is 3:00 PM on Friday, Dec. 18, in the Neil Carey Arena.
