(LEBANON, Ill. – Dec. 5) – The McKendree women's basketball team had four players end with double figures, but fell short to the University of Indianapolis, 62-68, Saturday afternoon.
The Bearcats were the first to get on the board and the Greyhounds would answer right back in the next possession. The Bearcats would trail by a basket after the first quarter. McKendree has their highest shooting percentage in the second quarter, posting a 66.7 percentage, including a three-pointer by
Sydney Diekhoff (Pekin, IL/Pekin Community) to put her team within five, just over two minutes left in the half. The Bearcats would start the final 10 minutes of the contest three points down, and decrease their deficit to just one point with 7:14 left.
Christy Fortune (Appleton, WI/Appleton West) would hit a three-pointer to tie the game 51-51.
Erin Golden (Batavia, IL/Batavia) would add a three-pointer to put the Bearcats ahead 56-54 with 2:20 left in the game.
Madison Jones (Abingdon, IL/Abiingdon-Avon) would hit a three-pointer and put the Bearcats within four, but the game would finish with a six-point difference.
Leading the way for the Bearcats with 12 points was
Christy Fortune (Appleton, WI/Appleton West). The freshman went 5-for-5 from the floor, 1-for-1 in free throws and 1-for-1 in three-point attempts.
Callie Pohlman (Appleton, WI/Appleton North) was right behind her with 11 points. Tallying 10 points apiece were
Sydney Diekhoff (Pekin, IL/Pekin Community) and
Madison Jones (Abingdon, IL/Abiingdon-Avon). Jones also led the team in rebounds with six in the contest.
The greyhounds came off the bench hungry for their first win of the 2020-21 season. The greyhounds would start the contest going back and forth with the Bearcats, but started a run after a three-point shot to put them ahead 6:10 into the first quarter. Another three-point shot would put them ahead by two to end the first quarter. The Greyhounds came out in the second quarter with the same momentum pushing ahead by as many as eight before halftime, shooting a 63.6 percent form field goal range. The Greyhounds' largest lead came in the fourth quarter, where they led by 10 points. Their lead would decrease and would momentarily trail the Bearcats, but take home their first win.
A key player for the Greyhounds with 20 points was Taylor Drury. She was followed by Sadie Hill who scored 16 points and five rebounds.
Up next on the schedule for McKendree is the University of Southern Indiana on Saturday, Dec. 12. The Bearcats will tip-off at 1:00 PM at the Screaming Eagles Arena in Evansville, Ind.
