Softball Sweeps Moorhead in Home-Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (LEBANON, Ill., Feb. 29) – McKendree University softball team rolled past Minnesota State University-Moorhead with two victories 13-5 and 8-3 in their doubleheader home-opener Saturday afternoon.

McKendree had a successful day, completing each game in just six innings. The Bearcats now advance to an even 6-6 record.

McKendree was the first on the board in the first game against Moorhead, scoring two runs in the second inning and one in the third inning. They were ahead early with three runs until the fourth inning when the Dragons scored four to take the lead. The Bearcats' offense scored two runs on a single by Kelsey Sachs (Troy, MO/Troy Buchanan High School) to take back the lead 5-4. In the fifth inning, the Bearcats' came out swinging, scoring seven runs on four hits, including a two-run homerun. In the sixth inning, Jenny Homann (Freeburg, IL/Freeburg High School) led off with a single and eventually scored on a single by Paige Hayden (Independence, MO/Fort Osage High School), to end the first game with a 13-5 victory.

The Dragons were on the board first in the second game, but the Bearcats answered right back, with a 1-1- tie after one inning. Morgan Andrews (Creal Springs, IL/Marion High School) hit a solo homerun in the second inning to put McKendree at a 2-1 lead. In the third inning, Sachs had a two RBI single to further their lead. Taylor Allen (Neepawa, Manitoba, Canada/Neepawa Area Collegiate) led off the fifth inning with a pinch hit single, followed by a single from Sachs. Allen and Sachs bot scored off a three-run homerun from Homann to put the Bearcats at an 8-2 lead and the victory.

Miranda Gajewski (Kronenwetter, WI/D.C. Everest) pitched five innings and got the win, only giving up two hits.

McKendree will take the field on Sunday Mar. 8, for a doubleheader hosting Davenport. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 P.M. at Bearcats Field.
