(LEBANON, Ill., Mar. 8) – The McKendree University softball team sweeped the Panthers of Davenport University, scoring 20 a total of 20 runs in their two games played this past Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats improve to 8-6 on the year and are currently on a seven game win streak.
McKendree initially trailed in game one 5-0 through the first five innings, but found their footing with an exemplary nine-run sixth inning which included a three-run homer courtesy of the bat of
Jenny Homann (Freeburg, IL/Freeburg High School), as well as a solo homer from
Taylor Allen (Neepawa, Manitoba, Canada/Neepawa Area Collegiate). The Panthers were unable to answer and the Bearcats took home the 9-5 victory.
The Bearcats continued their momentum into game two, scoring eight runs in the first inning in comparison to Davenport's one. McKendree would add one more run in the third inning to take a 9-1 lead, though the Panthers would answer with five runs in the top of the fifth with the Bearcats adding just two. Davenport would score twice more in the seventh, though it proved to be not enough as McKendree finished the sweep, defeating the Panthers 11-8. The Bearcat's offense in game two was highlighted by
Paige Hayden (Independence, MO/Fort Osage High School), who had one double, one triple, two runs, and two RBIs.
McKendree will take the field once more on Saturday, March 14 as they hit the road to take on Bellarmine University in a Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) doubleheader set to begin at 11:00 a.m. Central Time.
