(LEBANON, Ill. – Jan. 12) – The McKendree University women's basketball team looks to bring home a win from their mid-week contest at the University of Indianapolis, on Thursday, Jan. 14. The Bearcats will face the Greyhounds for the second time this season in Nicoson Hall at 5:30 PM (CT).
Kari Kerkoff's team is coming off a close loss to Lewis University, 65-77 Saturday afternoon. What started out as a slow start for both the Bearcats and Flyers, changed in favor for the Bearcats coming out of halftime. McKendree went on a 9-0 point run right out of halftime, and nearly doubled their shooting percentage in the 10-minute period. The Bearcats came within four points with under five minutes left in the game, but could not make up the point deficit.
Going into this game, McKendree is recording an average 64.0 points per game, just 6.7 points shy of their opponent. The women are 41.1 percent from field goal range, 31.7 percent in three-point attempts, and 69.2 percent in free throws.
Sydney Diekhoff (Pekin, IL/Pekin Community) and
Christy Fortune (Appleton, WI/Appleton West) are both averaging above 12 points per game, leading the way for their team. Diekhoff is 85.4 percent from the line, 30.3 percent from the paint, and 27.5 percent from beyond the arc. Fortune is 56.6 percent from the paint, 43.5 percent from beyond the arc, and 77.8 percent from the free throw line.
Madison Jones (Abingdon, IL/Abiingdon-Avon) is also high on the leader board for the Bearcats, averaging 9.9 points per game and leading 6.1 rebounds per contest.
About University of Indianapolis (UIndy)
UIndy heads into this second season matchup, 4-4 (4-4 in GLVC). They had their four-game win-streak snapped Saturday afternoon, after falling 57-75 to University of Missouri-St. Louis. Though the Greyhounds out-scored the Tritons in the second-half, 31-25, they could not make up enough to take the contest.
In the previous meeting between McKendree and UIndy on Dec. 12, it was a narrow victory for the visitors. UIndy maintained a one-basket lead throughout most of the contest, and the Bearcats erased the deficit to a one-point game with 7:14 left in the game. UIndy would overcome their three-point deficit with under three minutes on the game, and take home the 68-62 win.
