(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Jan. 14) – The McKendree University women's basketball team traveled to Indianapolis for their second matchup of the season. The Bearcats dominated in the second half to defeat the Greyhounds 76-63.
McKendree came out of the game with a full-court press to try and catch Indianapolis off balance. The Bearcats would take advantage of the Indianapolis turnovers and great passing around the perimeter to open up scoring opportunities. They also made sure to stick around for an extra scoring opportunity during offensive rebounds.
Clare Breden (Jerseyville, IL/Jerseyville Community) would hit a three pointer from the right side to answer the Greyhounds' three-pointer, just one possession before, and out the Bearcats ahead by three with a little under two minutes left in the first quarter. McKendree's shots would not fall to start the second quarter, but an 8-0 point run would put them within one with 5:30 left in the half.
Kaelyn Froebe (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln) had hot hands coming out of halftime with back-to-back three-pointers and keep the Bearcats within three. Another three-point look from
Christy Fortune (Appleton, WI/Appleton West), followed by Froebe would put the Bearcats ahead by five with six minutes left in the third quarter. The Bearcats outscored the Greyhounds 28-10 and dominated all categories in the third quarter. The same momentum carried into the final 10 minutes. Overall, McKendree was 46.4 percent from the paint, 34.6 percent from beyond the arc, and 88.2 percent from the line.
The key players from McKendree were led by
Kaelyn Froebe (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln), who scored a career-high 21 points. Froebe was perfect from the free throw line, and 46.7 percent from the floor.
Christy Fortune (Appleton, WI/Appleton West) added 17 points and was 57.21 percent from the floor and percent from the free throw line.
Clare Breden (Jerseyville, IL/Jerseyville Community) recorded a season-high 15 points, and was 60.0 percent from the paint.
The University of Indianapolis had three turnovers alone early in the first quarter, not giving their offense enough time to work through. They would tie up the game from a three-pointer at 2:50 left in the first quarter. A good three-pointer with 0:04 second left in the half, would extend the Greyhounds' lead to five going into halftime. Indianapolis had a harder time answering back to the Bearcats, and saw themselves in a 15-point deficit heading into the final quarter. The Greyhounds could not sink a shot beyond the arc in the final quarter, and were limited to shooting 36.4 percent.
Key players for the Greyhounds included Sadie Hill, who scored 21 points for her team. Hill went 7-for-10 from the paint and 3-for-5 in three-point attempts. She was followed by Taylor Drury who added 15 points. Drury was 50.0 percent from the paint and three-point range.
Kari Kerkhoff and her team will stay on the road for their next scheduled contes, slated for Thursday, Jan. 21. They will face the University of Illinois-Springfield at 4:30 PM in Springfield's TRAC.
