LEBANON, Ill. - McKendree University men's soccer capped off its regular season home slate in an unfortunate result, dropping a 0-1 match to the nationally-ranked Maryville Saints on Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats have stumbled as of late with three-straight losses after a six-match winning streak.
The Saints and bearcats played a closely contested contest with little difference between the two teams in the book. McKendree out-shot the Saints overall with nine but Maryville sent more on-frame with four. Both programs collected five corner kicks in the match with neither able to convert on those opportunities.
Just over six minutes into the second half, after a stalemate during the first 45 minutes of action, the Saints stole the ball from McKendree after a Bearcats' goal kick and found an open lane. The Saints proceeded down the side line, shaking off two McKendree defenders and finding a way into the Bearcats' box. With a pass from Ben Brodie, Ricardo Andrade fired the score for Maryville to pu the Saints up 1-0 in the 52nd minute.\
The Bearcats were unable to convert any further attempts at the Maryville goal. Five players for McKendree recorded a shot with four adding at least two. Senior forwards
James Stone and
Raul Arteaga each collected on shot on-frame while junior forward
Tony Bodul also sent one shot on-goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Alvaro Cortazar grabbed three saves in the 0-1 loss while recording full-time in the net.
