Women's Soccer Claims GLVC Regular Season Title

Stiffler nets two goals in match while Spotanski adds eventual game-winner

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - McKendree University women's soccer won its fourth-straight Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season title behind a 3-1  Sophomore midfielder Anna Stiffler scored two goals in the effort to lead the McKendree attack as the Bearcats locked up the top seed in the upcoming GLVC tournament. 

The Bearcats fired out of the gate with a score in the seventh minute from Stiffler who collected a pass from junior midfielder Elizabeth Goldstein and fired it into the net. The assist from Goldstein came off a throw in by freshman defender Kathleen Kenny as Goldstein took the pass and turned to make the cross to Stiffler. 

The remainder of the first half led to no scores but the Bearcats out-shot the Tritons five to zero in the first half while also recording two corners during the initial 45. 

The second half of play led to another early goal by the Bearcats as just 12 minutes in McKendree added its second goal. The second goal of the match belonged to sophomore midfielder Katie Spotanski, who fired a low drive towards the opposing net, slipping past the UMSL keeper. The goal would become the game-winner during the latter part of the match.

The 76th minute led to the Tritons lone score of the match but McKendree expanded its lead once again in the 81st minute of action. The third and final Bearcat score fo the outing came from Stiffler, her second of the match, via a rebounded corner from Kenny. 

McKendree earned it fourth-straight Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season title with the victory and collected the top-seeding in the 2021 GLVC conference tournament, which begins one week from today, on November 7. 

Women's soccer head coach Tim Strange said "We did exactly what we had to do...we won."

McKendree women's soccer will be back on the field in the GLVC Tournament as the top seed on November 7. The Bearcats will play host to Missouri-St. Louis at Leemon Field at 12 P.M. to open the tournament.
