ALLENDALE, Mich. - McKendree University women's soccer, the four seed in the NCAA Midwest Regional, dropped its opening round matchup, 2-3, to Great Lakes Valley Conference-rival Indianapolis. The Bearcats made an outstanding comeback with a huge push in the second half, which cut the Greyhounds deficit to just one goal but they were unable to cap-off the effort. McKendree concludes the 2021 fall season with the loss in Allendale, going 12-3-4 overall which included a fourth-straight regular season championship and a fifth-straight NCAA tournament appearance.
McKendree went down 0-1 part way through the first half after faultering with a foul in the box to give UIndy a penalty kick opportunity, which the Greyhounds converted in the 24th minute. The Greyhounds added a second goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in the first half after the Bearcats were unable to clear a missed shot attempt by UIndy.McKendree entered halftime with a 2-0 deficit to overcome.
The opening 10 minutes of the second half showed an intensity change by the higher-seeded Bearcats but UIndy found a gap in the 54th minute to bump its lead to 3-0.
The Bearcats finally broke the ice behind a rocket from beyond the 18-yard box by junior midfielder
Allison Frederking. Frederking's shot struck the cross bar and went directly past the opposing keeper, opening the gates for McKendree (58th minute). Her goal marked her second of the fall and first scores since the opening match of the season against Ashland.
McKendree then cut the lead to just one goal in the 81st minute via a score by senior forward
Morgan Cervera. Cervera collected a ball after it was volleyed around the UIndy box, firing it in for the second goal for the Bearcats. The goal by Cervera was assisted on by junior defender
Morgan Bova.
After its second goal, McKendree and UIndy played back and forth with no team dominating the ball in the last nine minutes. At the final horn, McKendree made an unbelievable effort over the second 45 but did not complete the comeback to remain in the tournament.

The Bearcats will return to the pitch for a spring slate that will be announced soon and then for the regular season next August at Leemon Field in Lebanon, Illinois.
