Men's Soccer Exits GLVC Tournament after Extended PK Session

Bearcats tie Saints in regulation, fall after 12th penalty kick

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - McKendree University men's soccer exited the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Sunday afternoon after tying the match behind a score by freshman forward Findlay Cook but dropped the contest after extra penalty kicks.Ā

The Bearcats entered the match as the sixth seed in the GLVC men's soccer tournament this fall, matching up against nationally-ranked MaryvilleĀ in the quarterfinal matchup. McKendree dropped its latest matchup with the Saints at LeemonĀ Field on October 24, 0-1, during a tightly contested match.Ā

The Saints, who were ranked 11th in the nation, scored in the seventh minute to take the lead over the Bearcats. The lead for the hosting-Maryville Saints went into the half even with the Bearcats out-shooting Maryville, five to three.Ā

The lead for the Saints was taken away in the 60th minute via a goal by the freshman Findlay Cook off an assist by senior forward Raul Arteaga and senior midfielder/forward Hampus Filipsson. The equalizer was the forward Cook's second score of the fall.Ā McKendree out-shot the Saints nine to three in the second half and earned two more corners than the host, Maryville.

The final 30 minutes of regulation led to null, leading to overtime in the quarterfinal matchup. The Bearcats fired the only shot in overtime, leading to a series of penalty kicks. McKendreeĀ senior goalkeeper Alvaro Cortazar came up big to open up the shoot-out series, saving two attempts. The Bearcats ended up dropping the post-regulation shoot-out nine to 10 to the Saints, ending the match.Ā
