Women's Hockey Season Preview 2020-21

(LEBANON, Ill., Feb. 5) – The McKendree University women's hockey team is set to open their 2021 season this Saturday, Feb. 6, at home against Lindenwood. Puck drop is scheduled for 12:30 PM at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex.

The Bearcats are coming off one of their best seasons as a program as they went 15-12, qualifying for a spot at the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) National Tournament. However, due to COVID-19 the tournament was canceled.

Head Coach Derek Pallardy returns for his fourth season behind the bench for the women's team. "Obviously, a lot has occurred since our last game almost a full year ago, so our players are excited for the opportunity to compete again," said Pallardy. "This year's team has come into the season with a great collective mindset, and despite the challenges and adversity that we will face, we are eager to get the season going."

Women's hockey recently joined the newly formed Women's Midwest Collegiate Hockey League (WMCHL) featuring some of the top teams in ACHA D-I. The league features Liberty University, Lindenwood, Midland University, University of Minnesota, Minot State University, and McKendree.

On offense, senior Paris Suzuki (Covina, CA/Covina High School), junior Jackie Leone (Lake Country, BC, Canada/Kelowna Secondary School) and sophomore Camryn Scully (Prince George, BC, Canada/Prince George Secondary School) are key returners. Scully led the three with 12 goals, eight assists, and 20 total points.

Senior Laurynn Davey (Owens Cross Roads, AL/Huntsville High School) and sophomore Madison Puffalt (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) are looking to carry over their momentum from last season. During regular season play, Davey recorded three goals and five assists, while Puffalt had three goals and three assists.

Between the pipes, junior Naomi Leasck (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh High School) looks to build off her outstanding previous seasons. The goalie recorded a .920 save percentage with five shutouts while going up against tough opponents.
