The McKendree University women's hockey team defeated Maryville University with a 4-1 victory on Friday night. Four different Bearcats collected goals in the win.
The Bearcats scored two unanswered goals within the first five minutes of the opening period.
Juliana Davis (Onanole, Manitoba, Canada/) started the scoring stretch with an assist from
Camryn Scully (Prince George, BC, Canada/Prince George Secondary School). Three minutes later, Scully scored another goal with help from
Quinn Atchison (Victoria, BC, Canada/Belmont Seconday School) and Davis. The Bearcats held their 2-0 lead into the second period.
With seven minutes on the clock, captain
Elia Burbidge (Tottenham, Ontario, Canada/The Hill Academy) extended the Bearcat lead following passes from
Madison Puffalt (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) and Scully. With a minute left on the clock, the Saints recorded a goal, but the Bearcats maintained their 3-1 lead into the second intermission.
McKendree scored another goal during the final period.
Jaynee Smothers (Buckner, MO/Fort Osage) found the back of the net unassisted, pushing the Bearcats to a 4-1 victory over the Saints.
Freshman
Brianna Burke () made 23/24 saves in the win.
McKendree will be back on the ice to host Maryville on Saturday night at 7:00 PM.
