Men's Soccer Defeats Conference Foe William Jewell 1-0

The McKendree University men's soccer team defeated William Jewell 1-0 on Sunday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup.

How It Happened
The Bearcats got off to a quick start after Rulo Arteaga (Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico) scored the game's opening goal in the fourth minute to give McKendree the 1-0 lead. The goal would be Arteaga's third of the weekend and is now leading the team in goals with four.

William Jewell had an opportunity to tie the game in the second half with three shots in the games 54th and 55thminute. The first shot was blocked, the second shot was credited as a team save and the third shot was saved by goalkeeper Alvaro Cortazar (Asuncion, Paraguay/STJ).

The Bearcats were able to fend off the Cardinals for the final 30 minutes of the game and secure the win.

With the win, the Bearcats improved to 3-2-1 on the season.

Behind The Boxscore
-  The Bearcats put up a grand total of 16 shots, eight of which were on net. William Jewell put up eight shots with three being on goal.
-  Starting in net was Cortazar. He tallied two saves on the day and earned his third shutout of the season.

Coaches Quote
"We started well, which has been kind of rare for us this season," McKendree head coach Scott Gyllenborg said. "I'm not sure if it's a combination of fatigue, or anything else, but we made everything too difficult. We missed too many chances, we made too many turnovers, we made too many silly fouls. In this league, you can't give opposing teams opportunities. Luckily, we got away with the win."

Up Next
The Bearcats will be back in action on Friday, March 20 against Rockhurst in Kansas City, Mo.
