Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | Rachel Rusnak

No.8 Men’s Volleyball Rallies with Loyola, But Fall 3-0

The No.8 McKendree University men's volleyball team had its first of two matches against Loyola-Chicago Friday evening. The Bearcats came close but could not finish in the three-set loss to the Ramblers (25-23, 25-21, 25-23).

Service errors were the downfall of both No.8 McKendree and Loyola throughout the match, that started early in the first set. The Bearcats did a good job, despite their .129 hitting percentage, finding the open spot between the front and back row of the Rambler's defense. Loyola would secure the first set win 25-23 from a tool off the block.

No.8 McKendree continued to run a very fast-paced offense, forcing Loyola's defense out of system during long rallies.  Similar to the first set, the Bearcats would end a scoring drought with spurts of point runs of their own. Loyola would take the second set 25-23.

A kill from Ethan Carroll (Barrington, IL/Barrington) on the outside opened up a hot start for the Bearcats in the third set, along with solid blocking efforts. McKendree held a solid lead through a majority of the third set, until Loyola had a late-set comeback run to tie the set at 22. The Ramblers took three of the final four points for the 25-23 set win, and the match 3-0.

Nickie Sanlin's team finished the match with 37 kills with a .223 hitting percentage, and led their opponent in blocks 6-5. Ethan Carroll (Barrington, IL/Barrington) led the Bearcats offense with nine kills, led the defense with 12 digs, and recorded two of the team's three service aces. The Bearcats had an impressive presence at the net with Patrick Ross (Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek) leading the way with five blocks, followed by Lucas Galifos (Mokena,IL/Lincoln Way East) with four blocks, and Wyatt Dimke (Ham Lake, MN/Blaine) with two blocks. Ross recorded eight kills and one assist, while Dimke added seven kills. Ryan Serrano (Phoenix, AZ/Boulder Creek) tallied 30 assists along with six digs.

No.8 McKendree University will take the court again against Loyola in the Alfie Norville Practice Facility on Friday, Mar. 18, at 7:00 PM.
