The No.10 McKendree University men's volleyball team closed out its final regular season road series with Purdue Fort Wayne Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats improve to 9-4 (8-4 in MIVA) after snapping their four-game losing streak with a 3-0 sweep over the Mastodons (25-17, 25-22, 25-14).
McKendree held its own form the start of the first set. The first six of the Bearcats' eight points came from blocks. The Bearcats compiled a .450 hitting percentage in the opening set, and their blocking limited the Mastodons to a .097 hitting percentage. A kill by
Zach Schnittker from the right side nailed the 25-17 set win for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats had a scattered start to open the second set, down early by four points. The Mastodons' front row did a hefty job of limiting the Bearcats to a .207 hitting percentage.
Patrick Ross would easily find the open court to end the set 25-22.
The Bearcats stayed the course, focusing on what they could control. The game took off in the middle of the set, following a kill from Ross to kickstart a five-point run. A service error from the Mastodons ended the game 25-14 in favor for the Bearcats, finalizing the 3-0 set sweep.
The Bearcats recorded 34 kills in the match with a .380 hitting percentage, along with 15 blocks.
Patrick Ross matched his season-high 16 kills, three of the team's four service aces, seven blocks, and five digs.
Lucas Galifos led both teams with a season and career-high 11 blocks.
Ryan Serrano recorded 26 assists, with the addition of five blocks and four kills.
Ethan Carroll led the defense with six digs, and one service ace.
Nickie Sanlin's and her team will be back in the Harry M. Statham Sports Center for the final two-game series of the regular season.
