NATIONAL CHAMPS!!!! Women's Wrestling Defends Title and Have Six Individual National Champions

The No.1 McKendree University women's wrestling team defended its National Championship at the second-annual Cliff Keen National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championship (NCWWC) Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats also added six individual champions.

Sam Schmitz's team was represented by 15 wrestlers, where eight made it into the finals. In the end, McKendree won its second consecutive NCWWC Title with 209 points while 14 Bearcats were named All-Americans. Six Bearcats were crowned individual National Champions, and head coach Schmitz was named Coach of the Year and Coach of the NCWWC Tournament.

This tournament was also a qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, that will take place in Fort Worth, Tex., April 2-3. According to the procedures, "the highest placed NCWWC Senior Women's Freestyle athlete per weight category who has yet to qualify, will qualify to enter the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – wrestling at the weight category she chooses". There were 10 women who punches their ticket to Fort Worth, including five Bearcats.

Below are the results for the Bearcats:

101-lbs:
No.3 Pauline Granados (Rialto, CA/Carter) took her first round by major decision 8-0, followed by a 4-3 decision victory in the second round, and a victory by tech fall (2:00) to get into the finals. In the championship round, Granados was defeated in a 3-3 decision by Angelina Gomez of Emmanuel. Granados went 3-1 and finished second overall.

No.2 Lizette Rodriguez (Fremont, CA/James Logan) took her first round in a victory by fall at 0:48, but was then defeated by fall at 5:48 in the second round. Rodriguez won by tech fall (2:07), followed by a 2-0 decision victory. In the third-place match, Rodriguez won by a 6-4 decision over Jennesis Martinez of Colorado Mesa. Rodriguez went 4-1 and finished third overall.

109-lbs:
No.3 Natalie Reyna (Hesperia, CA/Whittier) took her first round by major decision 10-0, followed by a victory by fall at 2:05 in the second round. Reyna was defeated by fall at 4:50, but came back to win by tech fall (1:42). In the third-place match, Reyna won by an 11-2 decision over Cassy Lopez of Presbyterian. Reyna went 4-1 and finished third overall.

No.7 Carly Valleroy (St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) took her first round in a victory by fall at 2:58, but was then defeated by tech fall (3:52) in the second round. Valleroy would win by fall at 2:38, then defeated by tech fall (6:00). In the match for seventh place, Valleroy won by tech fall (4:12) over Katerina Pendergrass of Ferrum. Valleroy went 3-2 and finished seventh overall.

116-lbs:
No.1 Felicity Taylor (Spillville, IA/South Winneshiek) took her first round in a victory by fall at 1:56, followed by a victory by tech fall (1:22) in the second round, and 3-2 decision victory to get into the finals. In the championship match, Taylor won by tech fall over Sugey Ceja of Tiffin. Taylor went 4-0 and crowned National Champion.

Katherine Sumner (Port Byron, NY/Port Byron) was defeated in her first round by fall at 0:38, followed by a tech fall (2:09) defeat. Sumner finished the tournament 0-2.

123-lbs:
No.4 Payton Stroud (Buckley, WA/White River) took her first round by an 8-2 decision, followed by a tech fall victory (1:28) in the second round. Stroud was defeated by fall at 1:19, followed by a 12-10 decision defeat. In the fifth-place match, Stroud won by tech fall (1:10) over Mateah Roehl of North Central College. Stroud went 3-2 and finished fifth overall.

130-lbs:
No.1 Cameron Guerin (Yakima, WA/A.C. Davis) took her first round in a victory by fall at 0:42, followed by a tech fall victory (2:26) in the second round, and then a victory by tech fall (2:23) to get into the finals. In the championship round, Guerin won by a 9-6 decision over Amanda Martinez of North Central College. Guerin went 4-0 and crowned National Champion.

136-lbs:
No.2 Brenda Reyna (Mount Vernon, WA/Mount Vernon) took her first round in a victory by fall at 1:09, followed by a tech fall victory (0:39) in the second round, then an 8-1 decision victory to get into the finals. In the championship match, Reyna won by a 1-1 decision over Ana Luciano of King University. Reyna went 4-0 and crowned National Champion.

No.5 Michelle Camacho (Rialto, CA/Carter) took her first round by a 4-0 decision, but was then defeated by fall at 1:09 in the second round. Camacho would win by tech fall (1:11) to get into the third-place match where she was defeated by fall at 2:42. Camacho went 2-2 and finished fourth overall.

143-lbs:
No.1 Emma Bruntil (Acme, WA/Mount Baker Senior) took her first round by tech fall (0:48), followed by a victory by fall at 1:18 in the second round, and then a victory by fall at 0:56 to get into the finals. In the championship match, Bruntil won by tech fall (2:43) over Ashlynn Ortega of King University. Bruntil went 4-0 and crowned National Champion.

155-lbs:
No.2 Alara Boyd (Muncie, IN/Yorktown) took her first round in a victory by fall at 1:17, followed by a tech fall (6:00) victory to get into the finals. In the championship match, Boyd won by an 8-2 decision over Kayla Marano of Emmanuel. Boyd went 3-0 and crowned National Champion.

170-lbs:
No.2 Joye Levendusky (Avon, NY/Avon) took her first round by tech fall (0:43), followed by another tech fall victory (1:05) in the second round, followed by a 6-3 decision victory to get into the finals. In the championship round, Levendusky was defeated by tech fall (5:30) to Yelena Makoyed of North Central College. Levendusky went 3-1 and finished second overall.

191-lbs:
No.1 Sydnee Kimber (Sitka, AK/Mt. Edgecumbe ) took her first round in a victory by fall at 0:49, followed by another pin victory at 0:19 in the second round, and another victory by fall at 1:15 to get into the finals. In the championship round, Kimber won by fall at 1:01 over Tavi Heidelberg-Tollson of King University. Kimber went 4-0 and Crowned National Champion. Kimber was also recognized for the most wins by fall in the least accumulative time.

No.5 Grace Kristoff (Belleville, IL/Althoff Catholic) took her first round in a victory by fall at 0:46, but was defeated in a 7-4 decision in the second round. Kristoff won a 7-0 decision, followed by a tech fall (3:30) victory, and a 7-4 decision victory. In the third-place match, Kristoff won by fall at 5:55 over Jessie Lee of Tiffin. Kristoff went 5-1 and finished third overall.

This tournament concludes the 2020-21 season for the Bearcats. No.1 McKendree finishes the regular season 5-0 for a third-consecutive undefeated season.
