(LEBANON, Ill., June 21)—McKendree University opened the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Academic Awards Week by placing 11 teams on the 2020-21 Team Academic All-GLVC list.
To earn Team Academic All-GLVC honors, an individual program must have its varsity team members earn at least a 3.30 grade point average on a 4.0 scale for the entire 2020-21 academic year. The Bearcats did their part to contribute to the 190 men's and women's squads that received the honor this year.
Of the 11 programs honored from McKendree, the Women's Lacrosse team registered the highest collective team GPA for the University in 2020-21 at 3.67. A total of six McKendree teams finished the academic year with a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. Along with the Bearcats' Women's Lacrosse team, among that group was women's cross country (3.64), Women's Soccer (3.60), Men's Tennis (3.58), Women's basketball (3.57), and Women's Volleyball (3.55).
Also earning Team Academic All-GLVC accolades for McKendree in 2020-21 include Women's Golf (3.47), Women's Swimming & Diving (3.47), Softball (3.46), Men's Swimming & Diving (3.45), Women's Tennis (3.31).
This year, the GLVC matched last year's league record with 13 member institutions finishing with 10 or more teams at or above a 3.30.
Of the 190 GLVC honored programs, 128 came from women's sports and 62 from the men's side. Three league sports – softball (15), women's tennis (15), volleyball (15) – saw all their teams above the 3.30 mark. Among the other notables, women's basketball (14), women's cross country (14), women's golf (14), women's soccer (14), and women's swimming & diving (eight) had all but one program meet the threshold.
Of the 128 women's sports, which include indoor and outdoor track and field as one, eight had more than 80 percent of its participating schools achieve the GPA milestone, including softball (15/15, 100%), tennis (15/15, 100%), volleyball (15/15, 100%), basketball (14/15, 93.3%), cross country (14/15, 93.3%), golf (14/15, 93.3%), soccer (14/15, 93.3%), and swimming & diving (8/9, 88.8%). Track & Field (11/14) was just shy of the mark at 78.5 percent.
On the men's side, 10 of 13 golf teams and nine of the 13 tennis squads earned the honor, followed by cross country (10), soccer (10), baseball (8), swimming (6), and track & field (5) to round out the 62 programs.
