ALLENDALE, Mich. - McKendree Men's Tennis brought home an individual champion here Sunday from this year's ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Grand Valley State University as junior Ryan Fung (Miami, Fla./Palmetto Senior) captured the Men's 'C' Draw Singles title.
Fung, who went 5-0 in his draw, earned a 6-2, 0-6, 10-6 win in the championship match over Lake Superior State's Aaron Osmond to capture the 'C' singles title. Fung earned his spot in the final following a 6-4, 7-5 win in Sunday's semifinal match against Borja De La Fuente.
Along with Fung's title in the 'C' Draw singles, two other Bearcats played in the Men's 'B' Doubles consolation semifinals on Sunday as freshman David Leon Mantilla (Lima, Peru/Colegio Parroquial Santa Rosa de Lima) and sophomore Julappagari Anurag Reddy (Dubai, UAE/CBSE School Nationals) fell to Hillsdale College's Tyler Conrad and Daniel Gilbert, 8-4. Conrad and Gilbert would go on to lose in the consolation final to Grand Valley State's Sean Miller and Kushan Shah, 8-2.
The Bearcats sent eight players to compete at this year's ITA Midwest Regional Championships and the Bearcat contingent finished the event with a combined record of 23-13 in both singles and doubles, including having six of the eight players advance to at least the quarterfinal round of their draws.
In the 'A' Singles Main Draw, junior Leonardo Frederico (Tijucas-Santa Cantrina, Brazil), who was seeded 14th in the draw, upset the draw's No. 1 seeded player in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals as he went 3-1 in singles at the event.
Sophomore Nanase Ebisu (Osaka, Japan/Hawai'i Pacific) advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 'A' Singles Consolation draw as he posted a 3-2 record at the event.
Fung and sophomore Subash Paramasivan (Chennai, India/Saraswathi Kendra) made to the quarterfinals of the 'B' Main Draw Doubles as they posted a 2-1 record at the event, while Reddy and Mantilla advanced to the semifinal round of the 'B' Draw Consolation Doubles and posted a 2-2 record at the event.
McKendree will next be in action this coming Saturday, Oct. 2 as they close their fall season with a 1 p.m. match against Missouri Valley College at Triad High School in Troy, Ill.
